IRCC releases the 2025 Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration

Canada admitted 483,640 permanent residents in 2024 (+2.5% YoY). The report underscores a “sustainable management” approach: prioritizing economic immigration (58.2%) while maintaining commitments to family reunification and protection.

The government plans to reduce temporary residents to <5% of population by 2027 and raise Francophone admissions outside Quebec to 12% by 2029

Ottawa signals an accelerated pathway for U.S. H-1B holders and other top talent

As part of Budget 2025, Ottawa is preparing to relaunch a faster immigration option tailored to H-1B visa holders and other high-skill professionals (tech, healthcare, research). Investments include $97M to speed foreign credential recognition in healthcare/construction and $1.4B for a new Research Chairs Program. While specific criteria/caps are pending, the goal is a more predictable route to permanent residency for innovators and experts.

Sudan Humanitarian Program continues amid processing delays

Former Minister Marc Miller reportedly rejected advice to cancel Canada’s Sudan humanitarian initiative, prioritizing family reunification despite intake-reduction targets. Since Feb 2024, around 1,950 people have arrived; thousands remain in processing amid capacity constraints. With the conflict displacing ~12 million people, advocates urge faster processing and durable humanitarian commitments.
